What is Ayurveda?

Wherever there is life, there is Ayurveda

Ayurveda is the ancient tradition of holistic healing which pervades Indian culture as both lifestyle and medical system. As the original science of medicine, it has been passed down from teacher to student in India for generations over a span of at least 5000 years; preserved intact, it is now
making its way into global society. A system of natural healing which predates and anticipates all other systems of healing, being itself complete and whole.

The word ‘Ayurveda’ is comprised of the word ‘Ayur’ meaning life and ‘Veda’ meaning knowledge or science; it is the science of life.

The goal of Ayurveda is balance: health and wellbeing are a state of balance in our body and mind…

The aim of Ayurveda is to eliminate any current imbalance and restore our original state of balance, promoting health and wellbeing in healthy people and revivifying health in those who are unwell.

The focus is on preventive medicine, seeking to treat the disease before it arises, or else at a very early stage before it has become a specific ailment. Although it is also very effective at treating disease conditions, in particular, chronic illnesses as well as more acute presentations.

“Om salutations to the Lord in the form of the physician, Sri Dhanvantari, who holds the pot containing the nectar of immortality and dispenses the ultimate medicine, the knowledge of the self being limitless; who is the origin of all medical science, who blesses with the knowledge of the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease, and who dispenses medicine for body, mind and soul. May our understanding and practice of the science of life bring health, healing and vitality to all with whom we come in contact.
